Grey’s Anatomy Actor Jesse Williams appeared on Headline News and shared his thoughts on the Michael Dunn trial. The actor is a former teacher of American and African history, as well as a producer of Question Bridge, “a transmedia art project that seeks to represent and redefine Black male identity in America.”

If you aren’t familiar with the Michael Dunn case, here is a brief overview – A group of Black teens were blaring loud rap music outside a convenience store late at night. Michael Dunn (Age 47), who had been drinking rum and was out buying wine, argued with the teens to turn the rap music down. The argument escalated, but the 4 teens in the car drove off. As they drove away, Dunn fired 10 shots at the car killing 17-year-old Jordan Davis. (Coward).

In his Headline News interview, Williams says a man aiming 10 bullets at a car full of children should be an open and shut case. He relentlessly presents a stream of poignant statements and questions. “Feeling threatened is not the same as being threatened,” Williams reminds America. What if the teens in the car had been blaring Bon Jovi instead of rap?

The results of the trial have now come in. Dunn was convicted of attempted murder on three counts, but after deliberation, the jurors could not agree whether he was guilty of first-degree murder for firing at and killing Jordan Davis. Dunn will serve 3 consecutive 20 year prison sentences for attempted murder, but prosecutors will need another trial to get a conviction for Jordan Davis’ death.
