Nate Parker, who made his big break nearly 10 years ago in The Great Debaters beside Denzel Washington and Forest Whitaker, is using the experience he’s gained in the past decade to make big things happen for himself.  He ‘s writing, directing, and starring an upcoming movie based on Nat Turner’s slave rebellion. Look out Tyler Perry, there’s another triple threat making waves! The film will be titled The Birth Of A Nation. It was recently announced that Parker has brought Gabrielle Union on board for the project. It will be interesting to see how she adapts to acting in a period film. Other co-stars include Aja Naomi King (How To Get Away With Murder), Aunjanue Ellis, Colman Domingo, Dwight Henry, Roger Guenveur Smith, and Arnie Hammer. Source

Here’s some background to the historical event the film is based on:

In Nat Turner’s rebellion, slaves killed every white person they encountered while freeing slaves along their path. In the end, between 55 and 65 white men, women, and children were killed before the white militias gained control. In retaliation nearly 200 Blacks were ultimately killed, although only 70 participated in the act. Despite the tragic results of the rebellion, it went down in history as one of the most notable slave rebellions in American History.

The film is scheduled to be filmed in Savannah, Georgia beginning May 2015.
