BET announced last year that it was working on Being Mary Jane, a TV production starring Gabrielle Union in the main role. It is created by Girlfriends creator Mara Brock Akil, and directed by her husband Salim Akil. A new official summary was released by BET and posted on Deadline:

Mary Jane Paul is a one-woman-show: a successful TV news anchor, and an entirely self-sufficient powerhouse who remains devoted to a family that doesn’t share her motivation. Intense drama and unforgettable moments unfold as Mary Jane juggles her life, her relationships, her work, and commitments to her family.

The network flip-flopped between producing a full-length Being Mary Jane television series, and a TV movie.

After it premiered successfully at Black film festivals in fall 2012, BET announced this year that it would premiere as a TV series. They released a 15 second promo for the series in February. Still, the BET website gave no details about when the show was coming. It was thought it would be out sometime this year.

Unfortunately Being Mary Jane has now been pushed back to premiere in the first quarter of 2014. Those who were anticipating its release this year will have to hold on a little longer.

On the bright side, BET has made the announcement of show official via press release, and fans have every reason to expect that this series will be eventually delivered.
