Why We Laugh: Funny Women, a documentary exploring the experiences of female comedians, aired on the Showtime television network on Thursday, March 21. Don’t worry if you missed it. The flick will be rerunning many times over the next week. Why We Laugh: Funny Women goes behind the scenes with female comedians, including notable Black funny women such as Whoopi Goldberg, Kym Whitley, Kim Wayans, Aisha Tyler, and Sheryl Underwood. The women are interviewed and explain what they think makes a great comedian. The common thread seems to be that they have all been funny since they were young children.

Here’s the official summary from Showtime:

An uncensored look into the lives of the female stand-up comedian. Featuring interviews and live performance footage from some of today’s most prominent female voices in stand-up comedy and entertainment, this revealing documentary sheds light on the legacy of the female comedian and the dedication, courage and passion that is required to be successful in the male dominated stand-up comedy business. Narrated and executive produced by Joan Rivers.
