The 2014 Oscars turned out to be one of the most pleasant ceremonies of its kind to have aired in recent years. Host Ellen DeGeneres set the night’s light-hearted tone with family friendly jokes, pizza for the stars, and a “group selfie” that became the most re-tweeted tweet in history. There were no major controversies or hang-ups. The winners were balanced with one exception, Gravity, which led with 7 awards. The film even picked up Best Director, which many thought could go to Steve McQueen. The film 12 Years As A Slave still managed to pick up 3 awards. They were as follows:

Best Picture
12 Years a Slave

Best Actress in a Supporting Role
Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave)

Best Adapted Screenplay
12 Years a Slave (John Ridley)

That’s it as far as Black cinema goes. It was unfortunate Chiwetel Ejiofor did not win best actor, but Matthew McConaughey was an equally deserving opponent by all reports. For a full recap of all 2014 Oscar Winners, check out our list and post your thoughts on the evening below.
