Reports are surfacing that Denzel Washington is close to sealing a deal to star in The Equalizer. The film series may be the beginning of a franchise, and is based loosely on a 1980s TV series. In the TV show, Washington’s character, Edward Woodard, is an ex-military agent who helps everyday people in need.

According to Deadline the character is a: “solitary, monastic figure who hates injustice and devotes himself to helping people who are being victimized.”

If the deal is completed, Denzel Wasghinton will likely get his typical $20 million fee, meaning that a third of the tentative $50 million budget will be used to bring him on board.

In the meantime, look for Denzel in the upcoming film Flight, scheduled for release November 2, 2012.
