Octavia Spencer To Play Lead In OWN Racial Riot Mini Series
Octavia Spencer will headline an upcoming mini series for OWN tentatively titled Tulsa. The project will air as a two-night event that tells the story of the largest race riot in U.S. history. According to OWN, “300 people were believed to have been murdered in Tulsa, Oklahoma – a story that was largely covered up for decades.” Octavia Spencer will play Mattie Clay, a journalist who “moved to Chicago with the hopes of getting off the society pages and away from racism. Mattie’s journey eventually brings her back home to Tulsa where she must face the demons of her past and decide where her future lies.” Octavia Spencer is making a name for herself in racially driven films. The Help and Fruitvale Station both received enormous critical acclaim while centering on racial injustice. But how is the niche finding her? I’m inclined to hope her Oscar win and recent television pilot are signs that shes earned more flexibility in her choice of roles. Spencer has publicly spoken out on the limitations placed on her in the past because of her race and body type. She confessed that she’s had to play every stereotypical role her physical appearance would warrant in the Hollywood Reporters Actresses Roundtable. With that knowledge, do you feel Octavia Spencer’s role in Tulsa is one she selected with the desire to continuing to explore racial inequality through film? Or is Spencer accepting what is available?
