Tyler Perry is Writing a Sci-FI Movie
An article at Screen Rant shared the scoop that Tyler Perry is writing his very own sci-fi movie. Tyler Perry made a cameo in the 2009 Star Trek reboot, and he has admitted to being a fan of the Alien movies.
Screen Rant found this snippet buried in an interview on BlackFilm.com
“I love Sci Fi, I love the ‘Alien’ movies and the ‘Alien’ franchise. I was very disappointed with ‘Prometheus’, but I love that whole franchise. Those are my favorite movies. I’m actually working on a sci-fi movie right now. [I can’t say anything other than] I’m writing a sci-fi movie that I’m really excited about.”
Tyler Perry’s movies in the past have targeted an African American audience, and reflected the culture. On the big screen, science fiction series, like Star Trek, have been proactive in featuring a diverse cast of central characters. Gene Roddenberry, Star Trek’s conceptualizer, wanted each original regular cast member to represent a continent. Reiterations of the series up to the most recent 2009 revival have followed the suit.
An all or mostly all Black cast in a science fiction feature film backed by the power of Tyler Perry studios would be quite the anomaly. However, its hard to predict what the film could amass at the box office. Science Fiction films usually require expensive cgi, which means these films need to attract a huge audience just to break even.
Do you think this will be Tyler Perry’s first film where he writes for a multi-ethnic cast of characters, or will this be a “Black-centric” sci-fi film?
