Is It Greedy To Ask For More Octavia Spencer In The Red Band Society Trailer?

red-band-society-octavia-spencer-clipsFox has released an extended trailer previewing their upcoming Fall 2014 series The Red Band Society. We already have a few post on the series, which features Octavia Spencer as a nurse in the hospital wing for critically ill teenagers. But in case you’ve missed our coverage, here’s the official synopsis from Fox:

What if a hospital was your high school, boarding school and summer camp rolled into one? What if it was the place where you fell in love for the first time and made friendships that lasted a lifetime? And what if it was all weirdly hilarious and the most fun you ever had in your entire life? This is the world of RED BAND SOCIETY. From Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television, starring Academy Award-winning actress Octavia Spencer (“The Help,” “Fruitvale Station”) and based on the award-winning Spanish series, “Polseres Vermelles,” RED BAND SOCIETY is a provocative, unconventional and, at times, comic high school drama told through the eyes of a group of teenagers who meet as patients in the pediatric ward of Ocean Park Hospital in Los Angeles.

It feels as if we’ve been led on to expect more of Octavia Spencer in the show than there actually is. Her scenes in the trailer are sparse. Fox has certainly been keen to play up her Academy-Award winning status in their show synopsis. But the series seems to focus on the seriously ill, unusually good-looking, thin, stylish, upper-middle class teenagers and their relationships with one another. Octavia Spencer plays the teen’s nurse, and it looks like that’s all that she is. It may be greedy to ask for more Octavia Spencer, what with the likes of Kerry Washington, Nicole Beharie, and Viola Davis leading primetime TV shows in Fall 2014, but somehow its still disappointing to see the trailer suggests Spencer may not be a central focus on the show. In fact, the show may have stood a better chance at succeeding had they gone that route. At present, it looks like a glamorized portrayal of what it is like to be young and ill.
