A new drama titled Gotham is heading to the Fox television network. The series stars Southland actor Ben McKenzie as lead character Police Commissioner James Gordon, a prominent “good guy” in Christopher Nolan’s Batman films as well as in the original comic series. Jada Pinkett-Smith will be playing a key villain in the series’ first season. Her character, who was not in the comics, is called Fish Mooney. Mooney is described as “a sadistic gangster boss and nightclub owner (LATimes).” In addition, “Fish Mooney’s got the street smarts and almost extra-sensory abilities to read people like an open book…Imposing and hotheaded, she’s not one to be crossed.”

The series is an origin series, obviously set in Gotham City, which will document James Gordon’s journey from city detective to police commissioner. The series is a prequel set before Batman came into being. According to Fox, it will explain why personas such as Catwoman, The Penguin, The Riddler, Two-Face, and the Joker came into being.
