She would be starring alongside 5 time Tony award winner Audra McDonald, who recently appeared in NBC’s Sound Of Music remake. The play revolves around a mother trying to keep her daughter from committing suicide.

The play has had successful past runs. It won a 1983 Pulitzer Prize for drama. The original version starred Kathy Bates as Mama, which appears would be Oprah Winfrey’s role. The original play received 4 Tony nominations for its Broadway run. In 1986 it was remade again in the form of a film which featured Sissy Spacek and Anne Bancroft. A Mexican version titled Buenas Noches, Mama was produced in 2010 to excellent reviews.

Currently the project;s producer Scott Sanders is in talks with Oprah regarding the role. He gave this quote on NYTimes:

“Oprah has had a longstanding desire to act on Broadway,” Mr. Sanders said. “She understands how unique and challenging performing live on stage will be as an actress. She and I have been looking at a number of plays and roles in order to find material and a character that truly resonate with her. We’ve recently read something that we’re both excited about but are not yet ready to officially announce the specifics.”

Apparently the two potential lead actresses have already done a reading of the script, so a final announcement should be available soon.
