angelalansburry-comments-octaviaspencerAngela Lansbury played the character Jessica Fletcher in the 12-year-running television series Murder, She Wrote. Last month it was announced that Octavia Spencer would star in a remake of the television series. Lansburry caught wind of the remake and did not seem too happy with the whole idea. The exact quote she gave regarding the remake is floating around the web. We found it in an article over at HuffPost. Lansbury said:

“I think it’s a mistake to call it ‘Murder, She Wrote,'” Lansbury said, “because ‘Murder, She Wrote’ will always be about a Cabot Cove and this wonderful little group of people who told those lovely stories and enjoyed a piece of that place, and also enjoyed Jessica Fletcher, who is a rare and very individual kind of person …

She added,

“I think it’s a mistake to call it ‘Murder, She Wrote,'” Lansbury said, “because ‘Murder, She Wrote’ will always be about a Cabot Cove and this wonderful little group of people who told those lovely stories and enjoyed a piece of that place, and also enjoyed Jessica Fletcher, who is a rare and very individual kind of person …

“So I’m sorry that they have to use the title ‘Murder, She Wrote,’ even though they have access to it and it’s their right.”

Lansbury wished Spencer well, calling her a “wonderful, a lovely actress.” It seems understandable she would be upset by the network taking something that earned her 12 Emmy Nominations over 12 years and giving the role to somebody else.

I don’t have a problem with Lansbury expressing her honest feelings on the subject, and I suspect the press is blowing it up for publicity. What else could she say if she was asked about her feelings in an interview? But maybe you disagree…What are your feelings on Lansbury’s comment?
