Just How Well Did Django Unchained Do In Opening Day Box Office?

Two highly anticipated films went head-to-head on Christmas 2012. The highest grossing of these two films was actually Les Miserables, which made $18 million. Django Unchained came in 2nd, and made an estimated $15 million.

However Django Unchained is clearly the winner in terms of making an impact. On twitter the name “Django” is still trending mid-day on the day after its release.

According to the Huffington Post, only 3 films have done better on Christmas day in the box office:

  • Sherlock Holmes
  • Avatar
  • Meet The Fockers

After looking up the years these films came out, I found out Christmas in these years fell either on a Friday or a Saturday when audiences are accustomed to going to the movies.

Les Miserables is a bit more family friendly, which explains its slight edge in earnings on Christmas.

However, it seems Django is clearly poised to overtake Les Miserables through word-of -mouth.

What do you predict it will make by the end of this coming weekend?
