The film Beasts of the Southern Wild has made $5,900,000 in ticket sales as of Sunday August 6th, 2012. According to Box Office Mojo. It was released 40 days ago in only 340 theaters. This number of theaters is about 1/10th  the wide release of typical mainstream Hollywood films. This IMDB says the films budget is rumored to have been $1.8 million, so it’s well into the profit zone, and looking like it may be an early contender for next year’s award season.

The film stars Henry Smith and Quvenzhane Wallis as father and daughter. The pair live in an apocalyptic, fantastical version of Louisiana. When the father becomes sick, the films fantasy elements increase. The official description at IMDB says as the store continues, “nature flies out of whack, temperatures rise, and the ice caps melt, unleashing an army of prehistoric creatures called aurochs. With the waters rising, the aurochs coming, and Wink’s health fading, Hushpuppy goes in search of her lost mother.
