Machinima Science Fiction Web Series Stars Edi Gathegi
IndieWirehas shared a news story and a a trailer that was revealed at comic con for upcoming Science Fiction Web series, “Hawken.” It stars Edi Gathegi. and won’t be available online until 2013. The series is based on a first-person shooter video game set in a “dystopian human-colonized planet industrialized to the point of collapse, in which the hunt for resources has become a battle for survival.”  Edi Gathegi is no stranger to the sci-fi/fantasy genre having had roles in both the X-Men and Twilight franchises. In the meantime, look for Gathegi this fall in ABCs Family Tools.
The special effects look pretty heavy (and pricey) for a web series. However, the Machinima shows have been utilizing this kind of production for sometime. Are you surprised to see a “lesser known” black star  in a heavily produced, broadly targeted, sci-fi genre roles? It seems black men starring in sci-fi roles is a growing trend looking at next year’s Pacific Rim and The Colony which will star Idris Elba and Laurence Fishbourne respectively. Is Hollywood finding that black men make appealing sci-fi leads?
